5.0 out of 5 stars Great in every sense!!, December 16, 2007

This review is from: Hohner Super 64X Gold & Black Harmonica (Electronics)
I must say I'm highly impressed with this harp. I started playing the harmonica a year and a couple months ago. And my first harp was the CX12 (wich it's probably the best harp to start, and a great choice to stay with too), so my comments are compared to the harp that I know the best, the CX12.
The super64x price in amazon it's the lowest (most other places are around $300 and above), so buy quick if you are considering this harp. About the harp itself it's very airtight, even in the lower octave, wich can't be said with the standard chromonica 64 (haven't tried the super 64 though). The extra octave sounds awsome, specially the first two holes that sound much like a tenor sax. The windsavers haven't reported any problem so far (I've had some problems with the CX12, but had been solved mostly trough improving my technique). The button it's great, doesn't make too much sound when pressed fast (as the Cx12's, wich has to be pressed with more care to prevent the click sound). The... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best 16 Hole chromatic, February 22, 2008

This review is from: Hohner Super 64X Gold & Black Harmonica (Electronics)
I have several chromatic harmonicas, none matches the tone or feel of the super 64X. When researching on the internet, you'll see some complaints that these harps often aren't very airtight right out of the box. Mine was pretty leaky. I applied some silicone between the comb and the slide assembly (found some advice on the internet). It is now remarkably airtight, and a pleasure to play. There are the usual headaches with the windsavers, nothing serious, and actually less troublesome than my other harps. Note that it is often hard to produce a good sound from the second hole (that would be the 6th hole on a 16 hole chromatic like this one) when you're starting out--that's usually not the harp's fault.
That said, despite it's bulk, this is my favorite harmonica. I've never heard a nicer sounding harp. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hohner Super 64x harmonica, March 15, 2009
This review is from: Hohner Super 64X Gold & Black Harmonica (Electronics)
I have had mine for quite a while...about 8 years or more. It has been trouble free and still sweet sounding. The lower octave is really special and gives some nice versatility. Mine is tight and no air leak issues. It is a huge step up from the old Hohner Chromonica (12 hole) and a second hand 12 hole Suprema. I especially like the round holes over the square ones of the other harmonicas. I play mostly classical music and show tunes and it is nice for that. I am not a big time harp player though...I am a professional pipe and electronic organist and accordionist, keyboards and MIDI accordions. One of the most desireable accordions is a Hohner Gola which goes for about $40,000....I equate the 64x as the Hohner Gola equivalent in a harmonica. The harmonica is a side interest...I don't play it professionally...but fun to play.

Esthetics are a strong suite. The slide is precise and the gold plating with the black covers is very striking.

I was shocked at how much... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST VOICE MICROPHONE THERE IS!, December 16, 2004
By
This review is from: Shure SM7B Vocal Dynamic Microphone, Cardioid (Electronics)
If you are looking for a microphone for voice-overs or broadcast use, THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO BUY.

The Shure SM-5 and SM-7 microphones are the best voice mics ever made. The large SM-5 is no longer made, so you can only find it used, but the SM-7 is just as good. Either one, you have the best.

Don't let the price fool you. I have brought this in to studios that have $3000 Neuman condenser mics and they laughed when I said I wanted to use my $300 Shure mic instead. I told them to put up both mics and do an A/B test while I spoke into each of them. The three other audio engineers in the studio had to agree, the Shure was better and it was a night and day difference, not hard at all to decide it was best.

This mic has a warmth and rich sound no other mic can give you.

Even industry publications like MIX MAGAZINE and RadioWorld have done reviews where they did the same tests and said the same things about this mic in comparison to the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite vocal mic, October 14, 2009

You know how your singing/speaking voice always sounds richer in your head than it does on tape? This mic makes you sound on tape like you sound in your head.

The Good:
* Thick low-mids, a nice presence bump, and an agreeable proximity effect that has none of that "Help I'm trapped in a box" sound you get with an SM58 or other dynamic cardioid vocal mic.
* Off-axis noise rejection makes this a good choice for live room recording, where a condenser mic would get too much bleed.
* There's just something about the giant foam wind/pop screen that is fun to sing into. This is a friendly mic that sounds great.

You should know:
* You'll need a pre-amp with 60dB gain to get a proper level out of this mic. Most computer audio interfaces with built-in mic pre's have only 30-40db of gain. As a test, if an SM58 in your setup requires that you max the gain, you'll definitely need to pair this mic with an external pre-amp (you probably need one for your... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The Grail, July 17, 2009

I can't do more than underscore the endorsement of this mic by the previous reviewer (FOX). If you haven't started in the mic-collecting business, trying every trendy dynamic and condenser mic in the hundred dollar range and below, you might actually save some bucks by cutting directly to the chase and going for this one. I've always wondered why I can't reproduce the sounds of our local NPR outlet, and I finally realize it's because they have the Shure SM7B and I don't.

It enhances the voice with depth and richness and filters out the pops and unwanted percussives (face it, those separate pop filters are cumbersome to use). It's very directional and "selective" (rejecting room ambience and background noise), so it's perhaps not the ideal mic for all applications. But for announcing, broadcasting, vocal performance and vocal recording, I don't see how anything could possibly equal let alone surpass it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, low budget, or marching band members, March 4, 2011
This review is from: Buffet B12 Student Clarinet
I purchased a Buffet B12 student clarinet 10 years ago to play for fun on the side (I was in high school band as a flute player). It has held up wonderfully. I've never had a repair other than replacing pads (which is typical for any woodwind instrument with pads). I gave this clarinet a 4 simply because it is a beginner instrument since it is made of plastic, but for that it is high quality with a decent tone quality.

This clarinet is also a great purchase for clarinet players in a marching band that hesitate to take their wooden clarinet to games/practice etc. It is certainly good enough to play in a marching band without such a great concern for dropping it or having it be rained as you would with a more expensive, high end clarinet.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great start for your student clarinetist., November 18, 2007
This review is from: Buffet B12 Student Clarinet
I've always been a fan of Buffet clarinets. I currently play a Buffet BC1193 and it's served me well over the years.
Parts are easily accessible should you need repair, this is a reputable brand, it is durable, and if you take good care of it, you can interchange parts (bell, barrel, mouthpiece) to achieve a better tone quality as the student gets to high school.

5.0 out of 5 stars FAR better than the cheap one I tried first., March 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Buffet B12 Student Clarinet
I bought one of these (used) to try to save some money. I initially had bought one of the $100 brands. Once I got this in, I quickly opted to return the cheaper brand. This one plays so well, makes me want to save up for the E11!

Overall, I am very pleased by spending more on the Buffet compared to the lower cost brand. I am slowly learning that price reflects quality without doubt in musical instruments. Being new to teaching myself 2 instruments, I had been lured into the lower prices at first and quickly regretted it. Go with Buffet and add some Vandoren reeds (I tried both Vandoren and Rico). You will not be sorry for spending the extra money for the quality.
